『街道をゆく 愛蘭土紀行 』
今回も『街道をゆく』です。私はこの全集は単行本全巻（すべて初版）と大半の文庫版を手元に置いているのですが、どの巻も赤線やら付箋でいっぱいなのです。
忘れん坊の私なので、司馬さんもどこかで書いていたということはわかっても、どの本だったか特定できなくて歯痒い思いをすることがしばしばです。きちんと索引らしいものを作らなかった怠惰を嘆いているものの、今もその労を惜しんでいます。
ですので、思った時が吉日なので、あとで、はよして今回はアイルランド人への差別的感情を感じさせられた場面を記録させていただきます。当然のことながら、以下の部分がそのすべてではありません。司馬さんの引き出しはドラえもんのポケットのように無限ですので、必要に応じてあちらこちらで出て来るのですから追いつきませんでした。
まず、今回引用させていただくのは以下の箇所です。
アメリカに定住しても、ほんの半世紀前までは、滑稽なほど差別された。差別するのは、主として英国系（ワスプ）だった。両者はあまりにもちがいすぎていた。イギリス人の文化であり、かつ文明でもあるその秩序感覚からみれば、アイルランド人ほどはみ出しているひとびとはすくなかった。騒々しくて酔っぱらいで、仕事の約束に鈍感で、といったように、ビジネス社会にうまく適合しない人がおおかったのである。

ただし、人間はふえた。アイリッシュ・カトリックは昔も今も産児制限をしないため、白人としては例外的に人口がふえる民族なのである。本国であるアイルランド島の人口がわずか約三百万であるのに対し、アメリカ合衆国でのアイルランド系は四千万といわれている。
そういう中から、たとえば西部劇の典型をつくった映画監督ジョン・フォード（一八九五~一九七三）も出た。その作風の成立のために重要な役割をはたした名優たちの多くが、アイルランド系だった。ジョン・ウェイン、モーリン・オハラ、ビクター・マクラグレン。･････
またこの四千万のなかから、二人も大統領が出ている。暗殺されたジョン・Ｆ・ケネディがまずあげられる。
ついで、若いころ俳優だったロナルド・レーガンである。
もっと適切な記述が他にあるのかもしれませんが、先月中旬に再読した『街道をゆく』の第30巻からの一節を引かせていただきました。というのは、昨日みた米国ドラマ2話で、米国内でのアイルランド系への差別的感情が感じられる場面に出会ったばかりだからです。
どうでもいいことなのかもしれませんが、子ども達への一般常識としての教示という意味合いもありますので、こちらのシーンも転記します。彼らがこのドラマをみてくれることはないかもしれませんが、こんな点にも父親が関心を持っていたのかと知ってもらえたらという願いもあります。
Joey: Hey.
Monica: Hey. Oh good-good you’re here! All right, I figured it out. I’m gonna take two tables of eight, I’m gonna add your parents, and I’m gonna turn them into three tables of six. Okay? And I called the caterer; I added two extra meals, we are good to go!
Joey: Yeah, they’re not coming.
Monica: (looking at him) What?!
Joey: Somehow they got the idea that you only invited them because of me. They…feel a little unwanted.
Monica: Oh that’s too bad. It’s true, but too bad.
Joey: Look Mon, if you could just call my mom…
Monica: Oh Joey!
Joey: Come on! Look just-just tell—let her know that you really want them to be there. Let’s not forget, this is a woman that has sent you many lasagnas over the years.
Monica: No she hasn’t.
Joey: Is it her fault that some of them didn’t make it to you?
Monica: Well, what am I going to say?
Joey: I don’t know. Just uh, just tell ‘em it was a mix-up with the invitations, or—No-no-no! Blame it on the post office. They hate the post office. And the Irish! But I don’t think you can blame it on them so… (He dials the phone and hands it to Monica.)
Monica: (on phone) Hello? (Listens) Yeah, hi! Mrs. Tribbiani? (Listens) Hi, this is Monica Geller. (Listens) Yeah I’m just calling to say that Chandler and I uh, really hope you can make it to the wedding. Yeah, apparently a bunch of invitations that we sent weren’t delivered. Umm, I guess there was some screw up at the damn post office! (Joey nods his approval.) (Listens) T-Tell me about it! (Listens) Yeah, yeah, the US Post Office? No, more like US lost office! (Listens) What are they Irish?! (Joey gives her a thumbs up.)

-Well, you know, Melinda’s got this antique store.
-Although, I don’t understand. Why is she still Melinda Gordon? Why won’t she take Clancy? She got something against the Irish?
-No. I’m sure she loves the Irish. It’s just that, you know, she wanted to keep her own identity, and…
-Well, if a simple name is the thing that defines her. Well, the thing is she’s got this antique shop now I know. It sounds so cute.
-It is cute. It’s… But it’s a new business, and she spends a lot of time there, and…
-Relax, Jim. I’m not gonna haunt the girl. I just want to get to know her.
