Don’t be so hard on yourself.

　いつものように米国TVドラマ “FRIENDS” をみた後に、劇場版 “Bewitched” (米・2005) を久しぶりに視聴しました。
　たまたま Don’t be so hard on yourself. という言葉を続けて耳にしたものですから、「STEP BY STEP 英語表現」番外編ではありませんが、書き留めておくことにしました。
　hard on は「~にきびしい」というこですから、「そんなに自分を責めないで」と落ち込んでいる相手を慰めるようなときに使われます。何でもない表現と言えばそれまでですが、とっさの一言としてストックしておくと便利ですね。

Phoebe: So-so, what do you want for lunch?
Rachel: Oh, I don’t know. I guess we have to eat.
Phoebe: Yeah, I do. What’s the matter?
Rachel: I’m just bummed about the way I left things with Ross. I shouldn’t have lied to him about having to work. He seemed so mad at me.
Phoebe: Eh, don’t be so hard on yourself. If someone I was still in love with was getting married…
Rachel: (interrupting) Still in love with?!
Phoebe: Yeah!
Rachel: I’m not in love with Ross!
Phoebe: Oh. No. No. Good! Yeah, me neither.

　映画 “Bewitched”は本当に久々だったものですから、Samantha 役の Nicole Kidman の演技も数年ぶりになるでしょうか。Kidman と言えば私にとってはこの映画になるのです。この作品が彼女の代表作とは言えませんが、彼女のキュートさを存分に発揮している作品だと思っています。
　折角ですので、この劇場版から基本単語を使った表現を一つだけ拾っておきます。
　Come again. 「また来てね」という意味ですが、相手の言うことが聞き取れなかったときの「もう一度言って」というときに使える用例です。但し、俗っぽい表現なので、ビジネスで使えるかどうかは疑問です。

-Hey, Jack.
-Hey, all.
-Hey, big guy.
-How’s it going?
